Brief seven: Collab with Steph ISTD

type factory brief... steph's blog

ME AND STEPH HAVE SPOKE ABOUT THE BRIEF... the link above is to the ISTD original Type Factory brief. Here below id what we spoke about but in a brief form.

Problem:
the general public do not know about Typography and it's journey.

1. people see typography but do not understand it.
2. the general public miss-use fonts
3. need to educate the public on how fonts can be used in context
4. share the history of famous typefaces
5. celebrate typography, both historical, hand-rendered and hand-drawn.

I intend to ... inform / instruct / persuade / direct / educate / promote ... to...

promote, direct and educate

a group of

general public that do not already have a interest in TYPOGRAPHY, and do not know it's history and origins.

... that

the fonts people use everyday have a history and there is a reason for them and a correct way to use them.
also that Typography can be fun and also free-hand and drawn.

Solution:
Method of delivery

Exhibition split into two:
#1 New type: hand rendered, showcased

#2 Old type: selected typefaces that have stood the test of time, showcased

The product:

A small book to be viewed alongside the exhibition using small icons to link the exhibition areas to the information relevant in the book. The book will have information about each typeface on display, it's origins, reason for success and context.
It will have rules of typography (handglovery).
There will also be a reference for photographs of the #1 part of the exhibition of the hand-drawn and modern type.

The book will kept and taken home as a momento, meaning all the exhibition is in the book for future reference and pleasure.

The range:

The promotion:
Creating a exhibition brand: posters, fliers, website, app, removable type on the street (type using flour)
At the event: badges, stickers, bookmarks.

The exhibition:

We need to research typefaces and pick out 10-15 that me and Steph feel have stood the test of time, are unique and shaped the work of type today.
We will create a piece for each typeface top display on the exhibition wall to showcase the front (no explanation, it will be in the book)
We will ask friends and design studios to submit type pieces to display in the exhibition, hand-drawn and NOT any fonts that are universally used.

Distribution / the context:

Promotion around the city centre. Hopefully the exhibition will be held at the Coin exchange in Leeds which would draw in the target audience. Advertised on facebook and create a website.
